Located near Makola Market and the National Cultural Center, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and Mausoleum provides visitors with an opportunity to get a better understanding of Ghana's unique history. The first country in sub-Saharan Africa to become independent, Ghana was first led by Kwame Nkrumah in the country-wide effort to break free from British colonial rule. A champion of pan-Africanism, Dr. Nkrumah was a controversial but widely celebrated figure both in Ghana and abroad. His body was laid to rest here alongside a museum dedicated to his life. Fountains and a garden of trees, many of them planted by foreign dignitaries, offer a cool spot to take a break before moving onto the many other nearby sights and attractions.
