Opened on March 5, 1957, the eve of Ghana's independence, the National Museum contains the largest collection of historical and cultural items from the country. Divided into three permanent galleries highlighting Ghana's history, traditions and culture, the museum takes a chronological approach to its exhibits, setting the scene with displays on pre-historic Africa. Most impressive are the extensive exhibits dedicated to traditional chiefs' regalia and those focused on indigenous Ghanaian musical instruments. Be sure to also check out exhibits on Ghanaian traditional textiles and pottery. In addition to the museum itself, there is a sculpture garden featuring life sized statues of important historical figures in Ghana, and a gift shop selling traditional wood carvings, hand crafted baskets, jewelery and pottery. Guided tours of the museum can be arranged upon request.
