Legon Boundary

Price:  Free admission

Type:  History Centers

Founded in 1948 as part of British colonial efforts to offer higher education, the University of Ghana has grown to become an institution of almost 30,000 students. Many of Ghana's leading thinkers and writers teach here, like the internationally renowned poet Kofi Anyidoho. The university is worth a visit simply to stroll through the green campus and to take in another aspect of Ghana's history and contemporary life. Stop by the library and browse through the large collection of works in the African Studies department and see if you can't sit in on a lecture by visiting the registrar and asking what professors welcome visitors to their classroom. Afterwards, eat at one of the student cafeterias where the Ghanaian food on offer is deliciously un-cafeteria-like.
