When the soft light of late afternoon pinkens the walls of Old Town’s central cathedral, you’ll suddenly understand that Albuquerque is at the heart a Spanish colonial city. Wrought iron balconies, timber beams and other details transport you back in time to when these buildings were built in the early 1700s. While some shops are crammed with tourist kitsch, most are filled with tinwork, paintings, jewelry, statues and other traditional arts and crafts you won’t see anywhere else. On Christmas Eve, Old Town is magically lit by thousands of luminarias (candles in paper sacks) lining rooftops, stairs, walkways and sidewalks.
