Ah, Amsterdam! You can lose yourself in fields of flowers and world-class art, then catch your breath on a life-affirming visit to the hiding place of a young girl who just wanted to grow up and write about her world.

My third trip to this city of canals, windmills and ubiquitous bicyclists provided plenty of opportunities to see old favorites—like the grand gardens of Keukenhof, with their 7 million flower bulbs—and try a few new things as well. Amsterdam offers travelers a cosmopolitan plate of choices, so there’s never a shortage of options.

2. Step behind the bookcase in the Anne Frank House and climb the stairs to the Secret Annex—where Anne and seven others hid for two years from Nazis during World War II.

3. Visit the Rijksmuseum and revel in its grand collection of art by 17th-century Dutch masters, headlined by Rembrandt van Rijn. Don’t miss Rembrandt’s enormous “The Night Watch.”

4. Tour the light and airy Van Gogh Museum. Though a tragic figure in his personal life, van Gogh was Holland’s most important artist of the 19th century.

5. Trek to Volendam by car or bicycle, and delight in freshly caught sole at dinner. Watch for windmills on your way to this quaint harbor village.
