Native Alaskans represent a vital part of Alaska, comprising nearly 20 percent of the population (much more than American Indians in any other U.S. state)—and it’s likely that all indigenous Americans have their roots in these cultures, which settled here, just across the Bering Strait land bridge from Asia, 12,000 years ago. Open only during the summer, the Alaska Native Heritage Center—an indoor/outdoor living history museum—offers a fantastic way to learn about Alaska’s native people, who are divided into 11 distinct cultures speaking 11 languages and 22 dialects. Board the free trolley bus from downtown to visit the museum’s recreated native village, where you’ll find live performances of traditional dance, storytelling, craft making and other interactive exhibits.
