The state’s largest museum contains art, history and science exhibits, as well as a branch of the Smithsonian Institution focused on arctic studies. The Alaska Gallery transports you through the history and anthropology of the state, and the art galleries show that Alaskan art is not all landscapes and wildlife. The Alaska Experience theater offers a 40-minute video about the beauty of Alaska on a 180-degree, three-story screen, which will surely motivate you to go see it all in person. In the summer, the museum offers free daily presentations by local artists and authors, as well as informative tours every hour. Learn about the Good Friday Earthquake of 1964, the second-most powerful earthquake ever, and be sure to stop by the museum shop and excellent Marx Brothers cafe for lunch.
