Although the official entrance to Denali National Park—home to Mount McKinley, the tallest mountain in North America and second-tallest in the world—is six hours north of Anchorage, the small village of Talkeetna at the southern end of the park takes less than three hours to get to. Said to be the inspiration for the town of Cicely in TV’s Northern Exposure, Talkeetna is best reached on Alaska Railroad from Anchorage, a journey complete with tour guides in each car who help point out wildlife. It’s a breathtaking trip, with the best vistas of Mount McKinley and possibilities to see moose, Dall sheep, caribou, wolves and grizzly bears. You can also reach Talkeetna by rental car or Alaska Park Connection bus service.
