Iditarod Dog Sled Race

Fourth Avenue, downtown Anchorage

907-376-5155 ext.108

Hours:  Begins the first Saturday of March.

Price:  Free to watch.

Type:  Festivals

The iconic Iditarod dog sled race starts every year right in the middle of downtown Anchorage. The race commemorates a 1925 relay of dogsleds that brought a vaccine from Anchorage to Nome just in time to stop a diphtheria epidemic that was threatening to devastate the remote village in the depth of winter. The grueling, 1,000-plus-mile race begins in early March, and thousands line the streets of Anchorage to watch the start, one sled team at a time. The start in Anchorage is only ceremonial; the real race starts the next day a bit farther north because of difficulties ensuring a good track from downtown Anchorage. Nonetheless, Anchorage makes it a party.
