No trip to Alaska would be complete without coming face-to-face with a glacier, and the best way to do this is with a cruise in Prince William Sound. Along with glaciers, you can see a huge variety of sea life including whales, bald eagles and other birds, otters, seals, sea lions and even bears hunting salmon in the wild. But most awe-inspiring are the enormous glaciers, which often seem like living creatures themselves, especially when they unexpectedly drop gigantic chunks into the water with a rush of noise and excitement. And of course, they may also be an endangered species, so this is an experience to savor while you can. Numerous options depart from Whittier, a 90-minute train or car ride south of Anchorage. Tickets for one of the best day cruises, operated by 26 Glacier Cruise, can be purchased in downtown Anchorage and include transportation to Whittier by bus or train.
