Board the last full-service railroad in the United States for a trip considered by many to be the most scenic as well. Leaving Anchorage, you head south, descending through a wildlife refuge and Potter’s Marsh, where a huge variety of birds as well as moose can be seen. From there, you reach Turnagain Arm, where the world’s second-most extreme tides grow seven feet deeper each hour. This part of the trip offers and excellent chance to see beluga whales and Dall sheep. After passing glaciers and Kenai Lake—with its striking turquoise blue color, the result of sunlight striking glacial silt in the water—you reach Seward, a charming town where many glacier and whale-watching cruises depart.
