Did You Know

Rule over Aruba has changed hands several times. Aruba’s first inhabitants were from South America’s Caquetio Indians of the Arawak tribe, more commonly referred to as The Amerindians, but in 1499, explorer Alonso de Ojeda arrived to claim the island for Spain. After the 80-year war ended, the Dutch acquired Aruba from Spain. The island has remained under Dutch rule, with the exception of a brief British alignment from 1805 to 1816 during the Napoleonic Wars.
