The Baltimore & Ohio (B&O) Railroad, one of the United States’ first and most important railroads, carried materials for manufacturing, mail, people and more. These days, the site of Baltimore’s Mount Clare Station railroad depot is home to the B&O Railroad Museum. Founded in 1953, the museum has since amassed an astonishing 15,000 artifacts, including the largest collection of 19th-century locomotives and other railroad paraphernalia in the United States. Visitors can get an up-close look at many of the artifacts, including exhibits on Civil War rail service, the U.S. Postal Service and World War II troop trains. The museum also offers a kids zone with carousel and train rides and other hands-on exhibits.
