Fort McHenry became a symbol of bravery and independence after soldiers fought off 3,000 British troops during the War of 1812, inspiring Francis Scott Key to write his famous poem, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” which later became the U.S. national anthem. Today, the memories of those historic events are kept alive through tours and activities available on site. Begin with a trip to the Visitor Center for an orientation video, followed by a walk to the fort itself. Here, you’ll take part in demonstrations and view exhibits, such as a uniform and weapons display in the barracks, the commanding officer’s quarters and the 1814 guardhouse. Kids exploring the fort can collect answers to various questions about its history along the way to earn a Junior Ranger certificate and badge at the end of the tour.
