Did You Know

The city was named for Cecilius Calvert, Second Baron Baltimore, a member of the Irish House of Lords who established the province of Maryland in the 1700s and acted as it first proprietary governor. Founded in 1729 and once a major port of entry for immigrants, Baltimore is the largest independent city (not belonging to a county) in the United States. It’s also Maryland’s foremost cultural center and home to attractions such as the National Aquarium, the Maryland Science Center and Pimlico Race Course, where the Preakness Stakes horse race takes place each May.
