Names to Know

From its beginnings in the 18th century to today, the city has been the birthplace of notable figures such as macabre poet Edgar Allen Poe, baseball great Babe Ruth and abolitionist Frederick Douglass, as well as contemporary personalities like actress Parker Posey and TV/radio host Ira Glass. Famously, Baltimore is also the setting of several American classics. Director John Waters chose the outrageous Hampden neighborhood for his play, Hairspray, while former police reporter David Simon set his hit TV police drama, The Wire, in the East District.
