The American whose name is most indelibly tied to Thailand left one of the most remarkable homes you are likely to visit in Southeast Asia. With the fortune he made from revitalizing the country's silk industry, the former architect, retired army officer and one-time spy built a complex of six traditional teak houses (all transported from various parts of Thailand) in 1959. Now a museum, the Jim Thompson House is now both a monument to traditional Thai architecture as well to Thompson’s prodigious taste for Asian artifacts—he filled the place with his personal collection of antique sculptures, paintings and porcelain before mysteriously disappearing in the highlands of Malaysia in 1967. Stop by the riverside restaurant for lunch and, of course, there's also a Jim Thompson silk shop.
