Tha Kha Floating Market

Samut Songkhram Province

Hours:  6 days a month: 6 a.m.-midnight

Type:  Neighborhoods & Districts

Bangkok has a handful of floating markets that are well trafficked by tourists (most famously Damnoen Saduak), but if you time your trip right you can experience one that is far beyond the madding crowds. Tha Kha is a 45-minute drive from the city and opens only six days a month in accordance with the lunar calendar (talk to locals about dates unless you're up to speed on your waxing and waning moons). If you get there early, you're in for a treat—you can walk along the canals, order a breakfast of noodle soup from one of the small boats, and see the old ladies cooking in makeshift stoves right in their boats. Afterwards, you can take a small private boat tour and paddle through the narrow canals past local coconut plantations.
