The 1369 Coffee House, pictured here, is a Central Square favorite for MIT folk.

Central Square’s many shops, clubs and restaurants are a crossroads for geeky MIT students, bicycle couriers and assorted hipsters. The ’hood is also home to Harmonix, the video game company behind Rock Band. A favorite hangout is 1369 Coffee House, renowned for caffeinated fuel like its fresh-brewed house chai. Another café, Toscanini’s, is justly lauded for its globally flavored ice cream—think Grape Nut from Jamaica, Kulfee (flavored with almonds and cardamom) from India—and a scrumptious weekend brunch. Live music mavens flock to The Middle East Restaurant & Night Club, an eclectic and often-packed venue with bands on four stages. If you’re turned on by technology, check out the MIT Museum, which highlights the institute’s recent innovations in holograms, cancer research, robotics and more. A new exhibit, Félix Candela: Builder, Engineer, Structural Artist, runs through September.
