If you’re fan of South American football and you’ve never been to a soccer match in La Bombonera—the Estadio Alberto J. Armando stadium that is home to the Club Atlético Boca Juniors—when the team is playing its archrival Club Atlético River Plate, you have no idea what you’re missing. For the entire 90 minutes the game is underway—and for an hour before and during the mid-game break for that matter—the concrete hulk of a stadium vibrates under the strain of the raucous noise made by the Boca Juniors fans. The team's power to intimidate is so great the team calls these rousing supporters the 12th player, or la doce. The feeling brought on by the cacophony can only be compared to the days when the world’s greatest conquering armies rode into battle on their horses with spears drawn and drums sounding! You don’t have to worry about being bored even if you arrive early, as the daredevil antics of the bravest fans who enthusiastically risk their lives to hang their banners along the stadium’s upper decks is a sight to behold.
