The third oldest zoo in the United States, the Buffalo Zoo, situated on 23 acres of land, exhibits animals and plants in ecological habitats and geographical arrangements that represent the biomes of the world. More than 1,000 wild and exotic species from around the world call the Buffalo Zoo home. In addition to Siberian tigers, Kodiak bears, Indian rhinos, low land gorillas, and king cobras, there are a few more exotic species including potoroo (an Australian marsupial) and the lesser galago, a small nocturnal marsupial from Africa. If you’re traveling with kids, make sure to also stop by the newly-created Delta Sonic Heritage Farm, a “petting zoo” of sorts where visitors can actually touch the animals. Created to resemble an Erie Canal–era homestead, this exhibit features heritage breeds of domestic animals and includes an adjacent wetlands.
