Conveniently located across the street from Albany’s famed Albright-Knox Museum, Burchfield Penny focuses on the works of artists from the Western New York area. It is probably best known for housing the world’s largest collection of watercolors by Charles Burchfield who spent a large portion of his adulthood in Buffalo working for M. H. Birge & Sons Company, one of the nation’s most prominent wallpaper companies. Stop in for a look at his paintings of grain elevators, harbor settings, railroad yards and transcendental landscapes all accompanied by sketches, studies and notes that aim to uncover Burchfield’s artistic process. Other things to see in the permanent collection include work by local notables Elbert Hubbard, Cindy Sherman, Susan Rothenberg and Robert Longo, as well as publications and handcrafted domestic objects from the Roycroft community. In addition to its visual art, the Burchfield Penney regularly presents concerts, readings, lectures, and workshops.
