Designed to ensure something is blooming year-round, the 65-acre grounds of Middleton Place are adorned in centuries-old camellias in the winter, azaleas in the spring and crepe myrtles and magnolias throughout the year. The site also includes a 1755 House Museum telling the story of four generations of Middletons through portraits, furniture and décor. The home, still under the same family stewardship for more than 300 years, is the birthplace of Arthur Middleton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and features a facsimile copy on silk of the famous document as one of its many artifacts. The Middleton Place tour includes a visit to the Stableyards where you’ll see demonstrations by a weaver, cooper, carpenter and blacksmith that offer a glimpse into the working life of artisan slaves back in the 18th and 19th century.
