Owned by the South Carolina Society of the Daughters of American Revolution, the Old Exchange played an important role in the country’s independence. In 1873 it became City Hall and is still a public building today. Offering public tours highlighting Charleston history during the Colonial and Revolutionary eras, one of its most popular highlights is the dark and tight confine of Provost Dungeon, where visitors are entertained with stories of chained pirates and patriots. The historical Great Hall on the second floor also recounts balls sponsored for President Washington. Before leaving, stop by the gift shop to pick up an Old Exchange T-shirt, limited edition print or book recounting the history of Charleston.
