Welcome to Columbia! As the capital city of South Carolina, this vibrant city serves as the geographic, legislative and cultural center of the state. With a population of more than 700,000, Columbia is also the state’s largest city—and, as such, succeeds in keeping its residents and year-round visitors abuzz with plenty of unique cultural activities, be they musical, historical, natural, artistic or athletic, among many others.

Columbia is an enchanting metropolitan area on the fall line of the Appalachian Mountains, with a history rooted as far back as colonial times and extending through the Civil War era and beyond. Nods to the past can be found around every corner here, from historic homes and antebellum mansions to the gleaming copper-domed Capitol building itself.

While the city certainly pays tribute time-honored tradition, it is also a forward-thinking and dynamic place, packed with state-of-the-art entertainment venues and plenty of modern restaurants, shops and districts. Columbia is also home to the prestigious University of South Carolina, whose large student population keeps the area both young and young-at-heart. Don’t leave town without a glimpse of this beautiful campus.

Thanks to its central location within the state, the city is also a great home base for those interested in exploring the multitudes of outdoor activities the area has to offer. Both state and national parks can be found within easy driving distance of the city limits—not to mention the stunning natural wonders found within the city itself. A true Southern gem, this charming city is sure to steal your heart.
