Names to Know

When it was just a frontier mining camp, settlers named their town “Denver” after Kansas Territorial Governor James Denver in hopes of gaining political favor. Unfortunately, Denver had retired by the time the name was official. Bob Dylan lived for a while at 1736 East 17th Avenue in Denver while he was doing a regular series of gigs at the Satire Lounge down the street. Abelardo “Lalo” Delgado (1930-2004), artist, activist, professor and author of “Chicano: 25 Pieces of the Chicano Mind,” was named Denver’s first honorary poet laureate in 2004.
