Cupcake Station

If your sweet tooth is screaming for a cupcake, try one of the many varieties, including Red Velvet and Gone Bananas, at Cupcake Station.

Building on a growing trend of gourmet cupcake bakeries, the Detroit suburb of Birmingham offers The Cupcake Station. The tiny shop sells 20 varieties of full-sized or miniature cupcakes, perfected by owners Kerry Johnson and Tom Holleman.

Customers gobble up traditional tastes such as carrot cake, and the unexpected, such as chocolate cheesecake. Each confection is topped with a cloud of sweet buttercream or cream cheese frosting and garnished with complementary candies. Johnson believes it’s the “individuality of the cupcake” that people love. “You can buy a dozen and every one can be different,” he says.

Try a top seller (or two):
  • Michigan Bumpy, a chocolate cake layered with buttercream bumps, dipped in dark chocolate and drizzled with white chocolate
  • Red Velvet
  • Gone Bananas, a chocolate chip banana cake topped with buttercream frosting and even more chocolate chips
  • Carrot Cake
  • PB & C, a chocolate cake with a dollop of peanut butter buttercream and a peanut butter cup on top
