In an effort to make art more accessible to the people of Hartford, Daniel Wadsworth founded the museum in 1842, making it the oldest public art museum in the country. Today, the Wadsworth Atheneum boasts more than 45,000 pieces of art and hosts lectures, films and performances. Visitors can take in American and European art in the form of paintings, furniture, costumes and more in the museum's permanent collections and its MATRIX Gallery features innovated pieces created in a more current medium.
