Visit Mystic Seaport and explore the Mystic River aboard the historic steamboat Sabino, one of the last coal-fired steamboats in operation today.

Along the Mystic River rests 19 acres of maritime exhibits, a re-created 19th century coastal village, shipyard and more ready to be explored at the Mystic Seaport: The Museum of America and the Sea (75 Greenmanville Ave., Mystic, 860-572-5315). Visitors can see a wide collection of wooden ships, boats and fishing vessels, and even climb aboard the world’s last remaining wooden whaleship, the Charles W. Morgan. To experience Mystic on the water, there are rowboats and sailboats available for rent. Or, enjoy a cruise aboard the Sabino, one of the oldest operating coal-fired, wooden steamboats. While you’re there, grab a bite to eat at Latitude 41° Restaurant (105 Greenmanville Ave., 860-572-5305), where the flavors of the sea—and steakhouse classics for the more traditional diner—are sure to please.

For shopping, head to Olde Mistick Village (27 Coogan Blvd., Mystic, 860-536-4941) one mile northeast. This quaint shopping village boasts more than 50 shops and businesses offering an array of treasures—everything from one-of-a-kind artisan knick-knacks to brand and designer pieces. Modeled after an 18th-century New England village, complete with a Colonial meetinghouse and general store, Olde Mistick Village offers visitors a more relaxed, leisurely shopping experience compared to the hustle and bustle of today’s malls.

Cross the street (Clara Dr.), and you’ll find the Mystic Aquarium (55 Coogan Blvd. Mystic, 860-572-5955). Visitors can touch a cownose ray and come face to face with beluga whales, jellies, penguins and more. Along with animals of the sea, the aquarium is also home to the films of deep-sea explorer Dr. Robert Ballard, who discovered the Titanic in 1985.
