Did You Know

Referred to as the “City with Soul,” Jackson proudly celebrates its blues heritage. It boasts the most markers on the Mississippi Blues Trail, which winds around the border of Louisiana to Memphis and even Chicago. The city also honors its role in the Civil Rights Movement with the preservation of the Medgar Evers home and the Margaret Walker Center at Jackson State University. The city’s history with the Civil Rights Movement was highlighted most recently in Kathryn Stockett’s 2009 bestseller, The Help, which chronicled the lives of Black maids working in Jackson during the 1960s racial segregation era. Many of the Jackson landmarks and neighborhoods cited in the book still exist today.
