Transportation 101

There’s next to no public transportation, and it’s fine to take a taxi from the airport, but it’s extremely expensive to take them farther than your hotel. Hawaii’s attractions are spread out so the best way to get around is by rental car. Plan to stay only in the Kailua-Kona area? A scooter might be sufficient for your travels, but since most sites are far off, it’s best to rent a car for at least a portion of the trip. Is Mauna Kea on your list of must-see places? A 4x4 vehicle is absolutely necessary to get to the summit, as well as a few other rugged spots on the island. The roads are quite simple on Hawaii—one road takes you all the way around and one cuts through the center of the island.
