The Captain Recommends . . .

Since I am on the road often, I am always looking for a place to eat that gives you that “at home” feeling you get at your local diner or coffee shop. The Muffin Man Tea Shop (12 Wrights Lane, Kensington, 44 20 7937 6652)in London is the place to go for relaxed breakfasts, lunches and light dinners. All the food is made fresh as you order, and the décor is simple yet attractive.

I have eaten all three meals of the day at The Muffin Man, and breakfast is my favorite. The menu includes hot cereal (porridge), eggs, bacon, ham and English muffins. For those with bigger appetites, there is the Muffin Man Breakfast with eggs, bacon, baked beans, toast, coffee and juice. Since this is a tea shop, there are also wonderful loose teas. For lunch and light dinners, The Muffin Man has great sandwiches made with ham, tuna, cheeses and salmon in the traditional English style. The spaghetti Bolognese with a side salad is delicious.

As the name indicates, The Muffin Man also has baked goods. Bakers make muffins, cakes, scones and pies on the premises, all of which are delicious as dessert or as a snack with a cup of tea.

The prices are very reasonable, with most meals costing 5 to 10 pounds ($7.50 to $15). It’s a great place to satisfy your appetite and your sweet tooth, and you will leave feeling satisfied, relaxed and with money still in your pocket.
