Jenny Lewis, former lead singer of Rilo Kiley and now solo artist, first made her name as an actress. So when she was asked to cowrite original songs and the score for the recent film Song One, it was a natural fit. An unexpected benefit was that the tunes that didn't fit the movie were perfect for her new album, The Voyager, produced in part by Ryan Adams. Other than writing for a male lead in Song One, Lewis feels there isn't much difference between being an indie rocker and composer. "It's all part of the same creative process," she says. Lewis grew up in Van Nuys and makes a strong case for visiting the San Fernando Valley, beginning with Ventura Boulevard. "It's where the Valley meets the city," she says. "It feels cosmopolitan."

Sportsmen's Lodge: "This [hotel] is an old-school Valley institution. It used to have a lake where you could go trout fishing. Then the restaurant would grill your fish for you."

Lucky Puppy: "They rescue tons of dogs, and a bunch of neighborhood kids work here because you can volunteer if you're a kid. Sometimes I sit on their bench outside and look for a new friend."

Artisan Cheese Gallery: "This is a great place for an afternoon glass of wine. It's run by a father and his daughter, and they're incredibly knowledgeable about cheese."

Kit Kraft: "If you're looking to buy stickers for your friends or spray paint to paint a rainbow on your suit, you can get all that here. It's a treasure chest of crafting supplies."
