West Side Survival Tips

DJ Dave

The West Side of Los Angeles seems comfy and manicured these days—yoga culture abounds, organic food is pervasive and hip eateries are abundant. But watch your step . . . it gets real around here.

  1. Don’t invite anybody on this side of town to go east of the 405 freeway for any reason. That’s crazy talk.
  2. If you feel like taking a casual stroll down Abbot Kinney Boulevard, be ready to part with at least $1,000. You’ll most likely come away with either a unique Scandinavian children’s toy or a summer scarf.
  3. If you are going to have coffee at Intelligentsia, make sure you bring an Apple product of some kind to stare at the whole time.
  4. Driving a Prius is still totally acceptable, but if you want to stand out, you may want to consider a Tesla.
  5. If you’d like to visit one of the many lovely dog parks in the area and you’re not a local, keep your eyes down and your wits about you. There are cliques.
  6. Don’t think you’re going to slide into some parking spot with a couple of minutes left on the meter. They all reset when vacated. Deal with it.
  7. That cute little needs-some-work two-bedroom house a few blocks from the beach just sold for $2.3 million.
  8. Bring your reusable grocery bag—or else!!
