This five-floor playground for children—and their parents—on the north corner of the Capitol Square opened in 2010 in a building that was once home to a Montgomery Ward department store. Parents magazine ranks the museum fifth on its list of Ten Best Children’s Museums in the U.S. thanks to fun and unique exhibits aimed at kids from babies to 12-year-olds that engage the senses and encourage hands-on exploration. Young visitors can’t get enough of the Hodgepodge Mahal, a two-story climber made from salvaged and repurposed materials including a Lake Michigan buoy, and the human-sized gerbil wheel that demonstrates how much energy physical activity can generate. Up on the roof, four-season exhibits focus on the natural world, with gardens, a chicken coop and homing pigeons.
