This cultural institution is Montreal’s equivalent of the Metropolitan in New York City, with an impressive permanent collection including Bruegels, Rembrandts and Matisses. Founded in 1860, the museum’s collections and pavilions containing them have flourished and expanded to comprise a 1912 Beaux Arts building, a modernist pavilion across the street designed by once-McGill student Moshe Safdie and a newly added marble-and-glass pavilion dedicated to Quebec and Canadian artworks. The institution renovated a former church to house a 444-seat concert hall as well. For lunch, pop into the onsite café. Admission to the permanent collections is free.
