A guided NYC tour, thanks to football star-turned-TV host Michael Strahan.

When Michael Strahan moved from Texas to New York after being drafted by the Giants in 1993, he was shocked by the breakneck cab ride barreling from the airport to his hotel in Times Square. “I was so scared,” he says. “I thought I’d never drive in this city.” Now, after 20 years as a local, he has adapted: “I drive all the time,” Strahan says. “If I was your cab driver, you’d like me, because I’d get you to your destination in a quick, safe and orderly fashion.”

The retired Super Bowl champion, who currently works double duty cohosting LIVE With Kelly and Michael and FOX NFL Sunday, may be the ideal tour guide. He can point visitors toward his favorite fashion haunts, including John Varvatos on Bowery for sweaters, Tourneau in Midtown East for watches and stores in the Meatpacking District for jeans.

“New York is all darker tones,” notes the dapper Strahan. “The only difference is that in the summer you wear dark short-sleeved shirts instead of dark long-sleeved shirts.”

He would then suggest a walk around Greenwich Village. “It has the grittiness that is not found in some of the most polished parts of the city,” he says. To hear live music, Strahan recommends Groove on Macdougal Street.

Finally, to wind down, Strahan insists on Café SFA on the top floor of Saks Fifth Avenue for its cocktails and views of Rockefeller Center. “They have a great drink where they put Kahlua, Baileys and chocolate liqueur with coffee,” he says. Isn’t that a little girly for a former NFL defensive lineman? “It can be as girly as it wants to be. It’s New York City: Be who you are.”
