This historic neoclassical revival building was built in 1925 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. It was known for many years as The Mosque Theater. Originally built as a temple by the Shriners, Newark Symphony Hall is an ornate, four-story building with Greek and Egyptian motifs, marble columns, a crystal chandelier, gold-leaf fretwork and two-columned side promenades. The 3,500-seat Sarah Vaughan concert hall is named for the famed jazz singer, a native of Newark, and has hosted such performers as Tony Bennett, The Metropolitan Opera, Count Basie, Victor Borge, Queen Latifah, Gladys Knight and The Temptations.
