Franklin Square is one of the original five squares planned by Philadelphia founder William Penn. Based on its location, this 7.5-acre park was first called North East Public Square. In 1825 it was renamed for “founding father” Benjamin Franklin. Today it’s a must-visit for anyone traveling with children. The square is home to the Philadelphia Park Liberty Carousel, a nod to the city’s turn-of-the-century heritage as the world’s carousel-making capital. Famous Philadelphia racehorses adorn the merry-go-round, such as Kentucky Derby-winner Smarty Jones. There’s also a Philadelphia-themed, 18-hole mini golf course where you can putt through familiar city sites like the Liberty Bell. Relax near one of the city’s oldest fountains, a 19th-century survivor, and get a bite at SquareBurger, serving burgers, fries, shakes and sundaes. Insiders order the “Cake Shake” —vanilla ice cream blended with caramel sauce and Tastykake butterscotch sponge cake.
