Cheer on the Duke Blue Devils inside Cameron Indoor Stadium.

When it comes to athletics, you’d be hard-pressed to find a more enthusiastic population of sports fans than in the Triangle area of North Carolina. With a high concentration of record-setting teams, state-of-the-art arenas and some of the most dedicated fans in the country, there’s always an exciting sporting event going on here. Anchored by North Carolina State in Raleigh, the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and Duke University in Durham, college basketball is perhaps the area’s biggest athletic draw—but there’s more than just college sports to keep spectators happy. Professional hockey, triple-A baseball and a great variety of sports bar flat screens are sure to keep serious fans energized year-round.

The basketball teams at Duke University are well known for their intensely passionate fan following, making a home game one of the most thrilling collegiate spectator experiences in the nation. Witness history inside Cameron Indoor Stadium, where the electrifying atmosphere, legendary men’s coach Mike Krzyzewski and die-hard “Cameron Crazies” will keep you cheering all winter long. Playing in one of the smallest stadiums in the nation, the Duke Blue Devils have won more than 80 percent of all their home games on this storied court, making it one of the toughest on-the-road stadiums for opposing teams. In the summer, catch a Blue Devils baseball game at Jack Coombs Field or Duke football at Wallace Wade Stadium in the fall.

The UNC Tar Heels, archrivals of the Blue Devils, are also one of the leading collegiate programs in the country. Don your Carolina blue and white, and catch an adrenaline-pumping game at the iconic Dean E. Smith Center, and be sure to visit the Carolina Basketball Museum while you’re on campus to see memorabilia from one of the team’s most legendary players—Michael Jordan himself. You’ll find NCAA Division I football at Kenan Memorial Stadium as well as numerous other UNC sports across campus where spectators are welcome.

One of the Tar Heels’ biggest rivals is the North Carolina State Wolfpack. You’ll find action-packed women’s basketball at Reynolds Coliseum and Wolfpack football at Carter-Finley Stadium. Don’t miss an opportunity to watch the men’s basketball team take on their local opponents at the RBC Center in Raleigh—some of the most heated college sports rivalries in the country.

If you tire of college athletics, there are plenty of professional teams in the area to keep you satisfied. In Durham, enjoy a triple-A baseball game at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park, an affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays and the inspiration for the 1988 film Bull Durham. Raleigh hosts the double-A Carolina Mudcats baseball team, an affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds. Cheer on the Carolina Hurricanes NHL hockey team in the winter at the RBC Center.

If you would rather enjoy the game on a flat screen, there are plenty of sports-themed bars all across the Triangle area. In Raleigh, everything on the menu at Hi5 Sports Bar & Restaurant is just $5, and visit Tobacco Road Sports Cafe in either Raleigh or Durham for wall-to-wall flat screens, comfortable recliners and gourmet fare from steaks to salads. In Chapel Hill, Carolina Brewery serves up delicious burgers, signature brews and even provides transportation to and from the UNC stadiums on game day.
