If you are looking for a unique perspective on African American history, spend an hour or two exploring one of Richmond’s national historic sites. This house-turned-museum tells the story of Maggie L. Walker, an African American woman and the first female bank president in the U.S. who dedicated her life to economic empowerment and civil rights advancement for African Americans and women in the Jim Crow-era South. Free engaging tours from National Park Service employees provide an in-depth look into Walker and her achievements. Adults and children alike will come away inspired by the passionate life of this 20th-century role model.
