Lay of the Land

The downtown area is a good place to start, but to appreciate Richmond, you should also venture out to the surrounding neighborhoods. Stroll down Monument Avenue in the Fan District, so-called for the layout of streets anchored by Monroe Park at its base. This Victorian thoroughfare is worth a stroll, just to appreciate the architecture. But there’s great shopping and restaurants too. Or walk and shop Carytown and then check out the museums. The West End has the University of Richmond with a gorgeous campus and Agecroft, an English manor house that was disassembled across the pond and reassembled in Richmond. Also, visit Northside with great coffee shops and restaurants, not to mention the farmers markets in summer and the Folk Fest in the Fall.
