The 30 million travelers who pass through San Francisco International Airport each year are greeted by local restaurants, art and aviation exhibits, children’s play areas and even an aquarium.

Dining // Stop in the Napa Farms Market or Legends of San Francisco for local fare. Vino Volo offers award-winning wine, celebrity chef Tyler Florence dishes out casual fare at his Rotisserie & Wine and Iron Chef Cat Cora’s new tapas bar has the best view of the surrounding hills.

Amusements // Waiting for take-off? Browse through the 8,000-volume library and exhibits highlighting the history of aviation in the Louis A. Turpen Aviation Museum, the country’s only accredited museum in an airport. Or check out Terminal 1’s aquarium, which features three distinct aquatic communities. There are also art installations on display in each of the terminals.

Eco-friendly Design // Terminal 2 recently underwent a $383 million transformation that includes designer egg chairs, mood lighting and free Wi-Fi. It’s also the country’s first LEED gold-certified terminal. The redesign utilizes natural light to cut back on electricity, while the toilets flush reclaimed water and the strict recycling policy dramatically reduces waste.
