Costa Rica’s capital city, San José, offers myriad adventures: Spend a day hiking around Volcán Poás National Park, where you will catch an up-close look at one of the world’s largest active craters, or take a tour of a nearby coffee plantation, where you will learn about how some of the world’s best coffee is produced—and have a taste of the many varieties offered during a “cupping” (coffee tasting).
If history is what you are after, peruse the Museo del Oro (Gold Museum), where gold artifacts from 500 to 1500 A.D. give visitors a glimpse into the tales of Costa Rica’s past. Start your day with an energizing breakfast at Restaurante 1930, where you will sip on fresh-squeezed juice while sitting on the open-air patio in the heart of San José. For lunch, tempt your palate with traditional Costa Rican barbeque at Barbecue Los Anonos. Finish your day at Park Café. We love their ravioli stuffed with crab and served with curry sauce, spicy mango salad and zucchini tempura.
At night, San José heats up with numerous clubs and discos from which to choose. If a more relaxed vibe is what you are after, spend the evening at the Teatro Nacional (National Theater), where you can catch a variety of shows, from orchestral music to dance, or grab a cocktail and listen to the sounds of smooth jazz at Jazz Café, where live music is always on tap.
