This newly renovated market has quickly become one of the trendiest hangouts in town. Active for more than a century, the market now serves two different purposes. First, it is a produce market, not unlike one you would find in Central or South America. You’ll find yautía, giant avocados, guineitos (small and very sweet bananas), and mameys being sold from brightly colored shops and wooden Creole porches. Second, it has become a place to eat and drink, primarily for young professionals. There are excellent little tapas joints and traditional restaurants, mostly surrounding the market’s small plaza called La Placita, including Piropos or Tasca El Pescador, which serve market-fresh fare and cheap beer and cocktails, usually in plastic cups.
