Opened in 2000 after a four-year, $53 million renovation from a one-time city hospital, Puerto Rico’s most important art museum is well worth your time. The island's largest collection of paintings by Puerto Rican and Latin American artists can be found here, some dating back as far as colonial times, acting like a timeline of island history. There are also sculptures, ceramics and folk art exhibits. Puerto Rican artists, both iconic and contemporary, are exhibited here, such as José Campeche, Francisco Oller, Rafael Tufiño, Angel Botello, Arnaldo Roche Rabelle and Antonio Martorell. An attached five-acre botanical garden is an interesting side excursion. Chef Mario Pgan’s Laurel Kitchen Art Bar is located onsite. On Wednesdays from 2 p.m.-8 p.m. admission is free.
