San Juan Viejo, otherwise known as Old San Juan, is San Juan’s primary historic and tourist district and dates back to the 16th century. Sitting on a 100-foot-high bluff on a small peninsula surrounded by Spanish-built walls and fortifications such as Castillo San Felipe del Morro, the district is the oldest existing settlement in Puerto Rico. Among the cobblestone streets and wrought iron balconies, the majority of all cultural attractions in the city can be found here, such as municipal buildings, palaces, historic homes and museums. Cruise ships dock here almost daily and passengers can be seen wandering the streets and ducking in and out of the restaurants, bars and shops. The district, along with La Fortaleza, was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1983.
