Santo Domingo Basics

Santo Domingo
Touted as the oldest city in the Americas, the Dominican Republic’s capital city is home to several firsts. The New World’s first cathedral, street, university, hospital and others still stand within the original city limits, known today as the Colonial Zone. History buffs flock here to admire the cobblestone streets, original colonial architecture, cultural treasures and museums that flood this neighborhood.

While parts of the city maintain the historical charm, others buzz with a cosmopolitan edge. Modern buildings are popping up alongside historical structures, chic restaurants offer menus and ambiance that rival some of the best in the world and several nightclubs throughout the city pulsate to pop, meringue and salsa beats spun by DJs or played live by musicians. George Washington Avenue, commonly known as Malecón (which means sea wall), is a five-mile boardwalk running along the coastline that boasts some of the best eateries and nightclubs.
