Besides her guitars, there are two items singer Brandi Carlile takes with her on every tour: a line fishing pole that she got on her 21st birthday and a set of TaylorMade golf clubs with hot pink golf balls. “You’d be surprised at how many opportunities there are to fish and golf [on tour],” she says. Carlile will get to experience a wide range of rivers, streams, fairways and greens while playing shows across the country through October in support of her new album, The Firewatcher’s Daughter. Carlile hails from the Seattle area, where she came up during the city’s postgrunge period. Her favorite neighborhood, Capitol Hill, is perched on a steep incline and energized by funky music clubs and coffeehouses galore. Here are some of her favorite stops.

“This is the first place where I played a show.” Though the venue has gone through a name change, it continues to attract rising local stars and national acts.

Terra Plata
“This restaurant serves locally sourced ingredients, has one of the best chefs in the city in Tamara Murphy and has a beautiful rooftop dining area.”

Starbucks Reserve Roastery & Tasting Room
“If you want to see the love behind [Starbucks CEO] Howard Schultz and his partners’ vision, this is the place.”

Serious Pie
Tom Douglas, the chef/restaurateur who opened this pizza spot, is “someone who would be considered the heart and soul of Seattle. He’s a big, happy and loving guy.”
