From the charming Georgian and art deco façades along Shanghai’s Bund to the futuristic skyline of Pudong, the city has plenty to keep design aficionados busy.

Where to Stay // Fairmont Peace Hotel
It was the hotel of choice when it opened on the Bund in 1929, and a renovation has preserved all the original glory of this 270-room art deco grande dame, from the soaring lobby to the Lalique glass statues.

Morning // The Former French Concession
Shanghai is home to the world’s largest concentration of residential art deco buildings, and most are in this district. Stroll the tree-lined lanes to get a sense of Shanghai’s former grandeur, and stop for a break at Fuxing Park, where Shanghainese practice tai chi in the a.m. hours.

Lunch // M on the Bund
Admire the architecture of the riverfront strip as you dine on the terrace of this historic building. On the menu is east-meets-west fusion fare made from locally sourced ingredients.

Afternoon // The Bund and Pudong
Walk along the stretch of Renaissance, Romanesque, Gothic, art deco and neoclassical buildings along the Huangpu River, then cross the river to view the China of the future in Pudong.

Dinner // 100 Century Avenue
Dine in the sky at the Park Hyatt on the 91st floor of the new Shanghai World Financial Center, one of the world’s tallest buildings.
